|Our Lady, Queen of Poland
The Sanctuary was built around an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was damaged by the partisans of Jan Hus, in 1430. The icon was immediately restored conserving the two wounds inflicted on the primitive icon.
In the 17th century, the fortified monastery situated on the hill of Jasna Gora on the edge of the town of Czestochowa resisted the attacks of the Swedes. Since then, the monastery and the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary are the symbols of the suffering and the resistance of Poland. Pope John-Paul II came as a pilgrim on several occasions. The feast of the Sanctuary is kept on 26th August. “O Mary, Queen of Poland, I am with you. I remember. I keep watch.“
