Our Lady, Gate of the Dawn
The Sanctuary grew up around a 17th century painting of the Virgin with out the Child. The painting was placed at the gates of the town, “the Gate of the Dawn“
The Blessed Virgin Mary is invoked as “Mother of Mercy“. The inhabitants of the town always came to pray for themselves and for the protection of the town.
A small chapel was built to protect the painting. A monumental stairway leads to the chapel. The place is venerated by Catholic, Orthodox and Lutheran Christians.
Pope John-Paul II came on pilgrimage to the Sanctuary on 4th September 1993.
The Feast of the Sanctuary is kept on 16th November.
