|Our Lady of the Pillar
The Sanctuary originates from the reported tradition that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. James, the Apostle, about the year 40 AD. She encouraged him in his work of proclaiming the Gospel. The name of the Sanctuary has become a first name for people in Spain. It means “pillar“ as that is where Our Lady appeared.
Our Lady of the Pillar is the Patroness of Spain and of all Spanish-speaking countries.
Pope John-Paul II made a stopover in Saragossa on 10th October 1984 on his way to visit Central America (Dominican Republic)
The Feast of the Sanctuary is kept on 12th October.
